My Hobby Journey
My uncle bought me my first models when I was around 10 years old. 2 of my uncles played Warhammer regularly together, and I loved going round their respective houses, looking at their Dwarfs / Skaven and admiring the love they put into their armies.
At around 10, I was bought a unit of space marines and a Rhino. I promptly ruined these models because I didn’t have a clue how to model them correctly. I still have those terrible models as a memory of the lessons learned.
DO file down mold lines.
DONT paint straight from the pot.
DO undercoat models.
DONT try and dry your models with a hairdryer.
I have learned, and happily impart these words of knowledge to anyone new to the hobby.
I then went into a Games Workshop store, and became besotted with Chaos Dwarfs. I still have them, in the paint job that only an 11 year old can manage. Basic, bold and with the most basic of conversions. All three of my blunderbusses were painted with great joy.
I never got to play with them.
A few years later I picked up Lizardmen as my first, proper army at the age of 17.
I was about to say how much I love my Lizardmen, and realize that I love all my armies, in a way that is so hard to describe (but I bet you can understand what I mean completely).
My first real job was an insurance salesman. It was more money then I ever really needed as a 17yr old, and spent loads on the army. My Carnosaur is still a prized possession.
Four friends and I would game every Tuesday evening. They started playing more and more 40k, and I felt slightly left out.
Enter the Witch Hunters. I started with a Sisters heavy army, but soon moved to an inquisitorial pure army (save for a couple of exorcists!).
Now I was a Children worker, I’m getting a bored of the Witch-Hunters. So I move to Tyranids. These were my main 40k army until around September 2010.
In September 2009 I move to Winchester for 8 months as a youth worker. Away from friends and family, the hobby was vital for helping me make friends. After Winchester I move over to Oxfordshire (because of a girl), and enter the Ogre Kingdoms to co-inside with 8th edition. Everything falls apart over there (because of the girl), and I hurry back to my parent’s house and my old room.
So a few months go by, I’ve got myself a basic job and a world-class mope. A couple of friends tell me (in the kindest way) to pull my finger out my ear and cheer up.
By now, I have given up on my beloved Tyranids. (See new codex)
So, already impressed by the new models for Dark Eldar, so I pick up the new codex.
Basically that is where I have been until now.
