Community Announcement: 2nd Annual Headshots from the Heart Charity Drive

Hey folks, Lauby here to offer a friendly helping hand to the fine human beings over at Wargaming Tradecraft.  Dave G is back for another 24 hours of Borderlands (2)... for charity!  The team is, again, doing this for Child's Play - which is just a fantastic organization.  I don't normally editorialize when someone is asking you to give them money, but I can't help it this time.

Sadly, there are no custom painted miniatures this time around, so the link with table top gaming is a bit tenuous.  But Dave is in our network and helping our members is what we do.  There are, however, a number of items that will be up for grabs via auctions just as last year.  The loot table is pretty cool so far and Dave has even managed to expand participation with an attached LAN party for those luck ducks who live in Canada.

Last year, Dave raised about $2,700 with his efforts and if you're the kind of caring person who wants to help sick kids, you can go here for details on how to help Dave set a new record.  As with last year, 100% of the proceeds to to Child's Play.  So none of that Kony 2012 bullshit here.

I encourage you to at least check this out.  I managed to watch a bit of the stream from last year and it was a bunch of fun.

New Member Monday - Brush Licking, Kick Starting

Hey folks and welcome to another busy week here at the House of Paincakes!  Dethtron and I will be continuing our exploration of Hawk Wargames' Dropzone Commander.  Lo should be back now that her store move is further along, GMort came back from sabbatical and Von will be continuing to captain the Top X ship to further glory.  To top it all off, we have a new author to introduce at some point!

It's all pretty exciting stuff!

But wait!  There's more!!

New Kickstarters

A couple of people have contacted us about new ventures up on Kickstarter.  As part of our ongoing mission to promote hobby stuff (when we feel like it) we're bringing them to your attention.  As always, we are not endorsing these projects in any way and urge you to exercise fiscal caution while in the wilds of the internet. Further, if you have your own Kickstarter and would like us to link to it, let us know!

New Member Monday - April Foolin'

Hey Folks and Welcome to the House of Paincakes!  We had some halfhearted thoughts about doing an April Fool's post, but there's already so much of that going on with the member blogs that we just took a pass.  Plus, the gags I've seen so far have been waaaaaaaay better than anything we would have come up with.  I've had two mini-heart attacks so far today!

Other than that, our Dropzone Commander review continues this week as does our resulting full posting schedule   Including the return of the Weekly Top X, ably written by Von.  I was particularly happy to see Von take up that charge.  The Top X had been our way of showing off the great community we're privileged to be a part of.   When I just plain ran out of time, it was a bummer.  But now it's back and better than it ever ways.

[Games Anatomy] We Interrupt This Programme

All right, boys and girls, here's the deal.

I'll be spending the festive season in the wilder and woolier parts of Merrie England (in the smog-strewn streets of Manchester, where Hark's from, and in the depths of the West Country, where I'm from), and as is the custom with me and these little away missions, I'll be pretty much off the grid while I'm there.

Now, I'll be coming back, don't worry, but I'll be coming back with something a bit different, forsaking my current role as THE ARR PEE GEE GUY here at the House of Paincakes and blogging about those tabletop wargames played with miniatures which we are (allegedly) all here to talk about.

See, I'm committed to playing quite a lot of 40K over the first few months of 2013 for my games club's slow-grow league - enough, in fact, to have a weekly or at least fortnightly battle report, and I'm obliged to produce a modelling report once a month as well, and if there's one thing I think the House of Paincakes homepage has been short on so far, it's regular battle reports.

So that's the long and the short of it. I'm taking a few weekends' break, but I'll be back early in January with THE VON REPORT. Stay tuned, kids, and happy holidays to one and all!

Monday News to Amuse

Hey folks, it's the day before the big election ere in the US.  Should be a fun one... naw, who am I kidding.  Half the country is gonna find out their gonna be mad for the next four years.  It's gonna be a shit time.  el oh el.

Anywho, over hear in the states, the local news sources have been drowning in political spew of various colorsa and that delighful scamp, Hurricane Sandy. Some of it's probably made it's way over to the rest of the world.  If you're anything like me, you love drinking beer and you've had about as much depressing news as you can take.  So let's have some feel good blogging news!

1) New Author!  HoP Idol 2 concluded semi-secretly and with more than a little disappointment concerning the time table, but so far, we've managed to get a new author out of the deal.  Last Friday we officially welcomed Gar Tenzing to the illustrious HoP writting staff and performance dance team!  If you haven't seen last Friday's article, then I implore you to check it out.  Gar needs some imput on just what kind of thing you guys as his audience would like to see.

2) New Barter Town!  Which is not to say it's a replacement.  More of an international expansion.  A starry eyed man named Ralph contacted us a while ago with a request for help getting the word out about BartertownUK:

I am the owner of BartertownUK, which was launched a few months ago in the attempt to provide a european trading forum for used miniatures, books, and everything else assosciated with the hobby. You may or may not have heard about Bartertown.com, the original and big name in online miniature trading. The problem with this site is that it is extremely US-centric, and a lot of people are against shipping outside of the US. Because of this, I obtained permission from the owner of this website to operate a UK counterpart, the only problem is, its trundling along with few users and not many hits, let alone trades!
We aim to provide a service to the community as a whole, no matter what period, scale, or genre tickles your fancy, we even allow the trading of paintball goods! Other than that, literally anything can be traded, from Warhammer 40K to historicals to Pokemon cards.
3) Contest!  Frontline Gamer frequently runs contests that cover the depth and breadth of our little hobby microcosm.  Normally, they tend to promote themselves, but the most recent chance at fabulous prizes could use some more user input.  Which is especially stange since it's one of the best collections of swag ever put up on the site.  Free models: check.  Free rules:  check.  A chance at internet fame:  whaaaaaat?  Yep.

The winner of the contest gets published on the Dark Age website.

All you gotta do is get your geek on and so a little bit of creating writing.  Contest details here.

 Have a good one folks!

Community Announcement - Charity Auction for the Really Good Cause!

Hey folks, got an announcement for you today as well as a New Member Monday.

Brian over at Weird WWII is about ready to get some charity auctions going today and wanted us to help drum up support.

The short story is, that he's selling some custom miniatures to help raise money for the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA).

The long story is a bit of a bummer and posted up on his blog.  It's a personal and touching so I wont steal his juice.  But I urge you yo check it out here.

It is my understanding that a new auction will be going up on ebay sometime today, so be sure to check out his blog for updates.

Community Pimpin' - FAQ's are Coming: Lets Help

Hey guys, got an interesting one here for ya today.  As you know, the 6th edition of Warhammer 40k came out but there's been a bit of FAQ problem.

Enter Son of Dorn.  SoD has been organizing a large community effort to try and make sure that the best possible questions we as a community can ask are answered in the FAQ due in September (if I remember correctly).  We think that that is fantastic and are doing our part to help him out in his effort.

So that is what this post is. Any serious questions that you feel need to be answered can be posted in the comments, and then Son of Dorn and some other fine nutters will collate them and try and get them into someone that matters at Games Workshop.

The purpose of this is not to bitch, moan, complain or rules lawyer, but to really help the community with the hope that we will somehow, just maybe get these viewed by someone that matters.

So if you are interested, lets get this going. If you think a question can be easily answered that someone has asked, by all means answer it. It will help the community as a whole if we can get these questions answered.

You an also check out this fine post by Naftka over at Faeit 212 which we were advised to use as a template (and so we did).  Much obliged, good sir.  Naftka has a bunch more comments so feel free to post questions there as well or instead of here.

Weekly Top X- SinSynn and 'Lo are The Usual Suspects

It’s a quiet late afternoon in the hills of southern california. Secluded on a brushy incline is a lush white mansion, with white lace curtains lazily floating in the gentle breeze in various windows. Low along the outer wall of the compound, a dark figure skulks in an attempt to keep hidden along the hedges. The figure is somewhat disguised by a trenchcoat, but telltale tentacles poke out from the bottom of the coat. One of them holds a digital camera with an ultra-mega-super zoom lens attachment. The squidly arm is trying to hold the camera over the wall and keep steady.

Kind of like this, only creepier.

Over the wall, we get a glimpse of one the mansion’s inhabitants, piercing green eyes glaring steadily at something in our direction. The pouty mouth is seen forming the words “restraining order” before the face turns away and our view is cut short by another form.

There’s a nebbish fellow with a bush jacket standing behind the tentacled form, smiling at SinSynn. The smile is a little strange, in a creepy, almost menacing way. There are Coke bottle glasses on the man’s nose, and he has a pocket protector holding several pens in his jacket.

“I finally found you! You’ve been very tough to find this week. What’s the deal with hanging out at Megan’s instead of HoP or WoW?”

“Shhhh, James! I’m stalking my future wife. Don’t worry, though, the restraining order stipulates that I hafta remain 100 yards from her at all times, and we’re currently standing 100 yards and one inch away, so we’re good”

“Crikey, that’s a relief. Listen, I just wanted to make sure everybody reads my Infinity posts. I heard you were writing Top X with Loquacious again, so I was hoping you would maybe mention them.”

“Sure thing, James. Not a problem. Warp Signal rocks. Say, buddy, can you hand me that telescope?”

“That’s not a telescope. THIS is a telescope...”

SinSynn stares in disbelief, and wonders how that thing fit in a bush jacket.

“Fer the love of...you Aussies don’t do anything halfway, do ya?”

“No sir we do not. By the way, on my way here I passed an odd man sitting in a corner. He said he was keeping it warm for you.”

“Oh, that’s my friend Captain Kellen. Yeah, I’ll probably need a place to hide shortly. Good thing he’s nearby.”

“I also passed a very angry young woman with a mohawk brandishing a pitchfork. She inquired about your location...”

SinSynn visibly pales.

“Was she British?”

“I do believe she was. She said she wanted to discuss your opinions regarding scantily clad models, among other things.”

SinSynn begins hastily packing his spying equipment into the various pockets of his trenchcoat.

“James, if you wanna live, I suggest you run. Run now, far and fast.”

James is no fool; he and SinSynn beat a rapid retreat.

The scene cuts away from the pair of fugitives to the outside of a small apartment in the heart of Chicago. A heavyset woman sits outside, looking with wist and aspiration at several glorious Wreck Age models. She is taking pictures like a madwoman, and humming “Sweet Home, Chicago” as she does.

Her cell phone vibrates in her pocket, and she picks it up.

“What?!” She whispers angrily at the device.

“Yo. I’m in a little bit of trouble and I need you to come pick me up. Where you at?”

“Of course you do. I’m in Chicago.”

“*WHO* are you spying on now? I thought that Gentleman guy told you to leave him alone.”

“Um. It’s research. Yeah. Research. I gotta know about the latest products, and he’s got an inside track on Wreck Age. If I come get you, we gotta come back here so we can bother Dethtron.”

“I dunno about that, kiddo. Dethy’s been all kindsa busy lately, doing too much on not enough time.”

“Well, fine. I’m gonna go see Lauby in his hellhole one last time before he comes back home. I *think* SpecialLadyFriend has forgiven me for last time. Maybe.”

“I need a ride. Come get me, and then we can go wherever. I just need outta here. And I got a friend.”

SinSynn turns to James.

“Ok, I got us a ride outta here.”

Suddenly, in the distance, a great din can be heard. A woman’s voice, shouting ‘bollocks’ as she forward slashes and chews her way through the underbrush.
SinSynn and James exchange a glance.

“We need to hide,” they say together.

“I know a place,” SinSynn decides, “it should be safe.”

They make their way over to Frontline Gamer’s blog, and tuck themselves underneath a Sunday Sermon.

SinSynn looks over at James, as he pulls a wall of text over himself.

“I hope Captain Kellen is ok.”

“He should be alright, his corner seems pretty solid.”

“True dat. I sure do miss Frontline. Been a while since I’ve had a good argument with him, that knucklehead.”

“I’m sure he’ll return in due time. Brits are pretty tenacious.”

SinSynn makes this face: -_-

“Yeah, I’ve noticed that.”

They look up, as they hear the sound of the Lo’Copter approaching.

Loquacious lands nearby and beats the wall of text with her very cute purse.

“C’mon outta there. We gotta go visit some other guys and then turn in our time sheets. Where did HE come from?”

‘Lo is pointing at James S, who is skulking behind SinSynn.

SinSynn flashes his trademark alien grin.

“I ran into him while I was out and about. He’s cool. So where are we going next?”

‘Lo seems more than a little frustrated and takes a deep calming breath.

“Didn’t he follow us home the other day? How did he know where you are?”

SinSynn seems to be thinking for a moment, an obvious stretch for the cephalopod.

“Oh yeah, he was at our place the other day. I thought you like, invited him for cookies or sumpthin.”

‘Lo shakes her head and mutters something about knuckleheads.

James S smiles brightly, but again with a slightly creepy look on his face.

“Cookies? Oh, can I come over? I LOVE cookies! And a sarnie! I want a sarnie.”

‘Lo gives herself a facepalm and then squarely stares at her Xeno friend.

“You know this kind of thing is only enabling his stalker tendencies. Maybe we need new stuffs to check out instead of our normal haunts, so those people don’t think WE are stalkers...”

The goofy alien squishes about, his excitement visible.

“New stuffs? What stuffs? I love stuffs! Lemme see!”
"Painting Santuary has a pretty cool Infinity Review. You should totally check it out. Take James S with you, maybe.

And, bro... this one is just for you. You have to see what Cameron made. It's...creepily beautiful. "

"Oh SNAP! An octopus. Cool!"

"Then for James S, since all the wildlife in Oz is so scary, maybe you might like this... I mean rats are cool and all... but with weapons? I dunno."

James S perks up.

"Hey! Plastic Crack- the guy's got the right idea. Crikey!"

"And I know the Imperium 'iz boring', but this stuff over at Darkened Visions is pretty cool. I love scenery."

The trio of troublemakers begin debating the merits of various stalking techniques and how to keep a safe distance while oohing and aahing over the cool things at the newfound blogs as we fade out to this important message:

Stalking is serious and creepy. Don't do it. This was a reenactment done all in fun.

We Interrupt You Regularly Scheduled Programming

Well, I will be specifically.

I'm moving in about a week (a little over 1000 miles away) and since this also goes hand in had with a new job starting the week after that, the HoP posting schedule is not exactly stable at the moment.

We've got a great group of authors here on the writing staff and it turns out that they're such a good team that we're well on our way to making sure that we have pretty good coverage for their lay-about bosses' lack of free time.  So I don't imagine that there will be many days like last Friday where we just plain miss something as important as a Top X.  Looks like I can cancel the team building retreat I had scheduled since they're already a team and so forth.

Anyway, I just thought I owed it to all our loyal readers and our stalwart blogroll members to let everyone know that things may be a bit dodgy around here for a little while.

Now, on to other stuff...

Today marks the first time on the HoP where we didn't have any new members join up, so for the love of god, people get out there and spread the word! Jeez!!  I mean.. if you wouldn't mind.  Sorry I flew off the handle there.  It's been a stressful couple of weeks.

Anyway, there's no New Member Monday today because of legitimate reasons and not because I slept in or packed boxes all day.

Though if anyone is interested, over on my blog you can take a look at what I was doing this past week when I should have been writing a Top X or scheduling a pinch hitter.

Thanks!

Dave G - Straight Outta Canada

Just a little late afternoon pimping for you today, the world famous Dave G is back at it again after a much needed rest from his fund raising activities.

In this metaphor, Dave is the cat.
He's got his own Blog-network-finder-doodad up and running and it's the real deal.  I'll let Dave explain:

First, my new network list is fully functional now, and a shout-out would be awwwesome and mucho appreciated. Haven’t had tons of people re-signup, (had over 70 sites before) and I’m really hoping to build this in to somewhere that authors can advertise their contacts and visitors can quickly find blogs with the content they’re interested in. The big change is that it’s searchable now, and authors can update their blog information themselves. How many times have you had to Google looking for an author to find their site, sifting through results, then from there having to look through bars is varying forms of (dis)organization for an email, Twitter or Facebook? This way it can be in one place!
Link:  Wargaming Network List

Second.. I guess things got a little crazy on your site over the last few weeks, which made me think of a feature I was missing - so this weekend I added content ratings. Authors can now choose to list their blogs for “Everyone”, “Teen” or “Mature” readership. The idea being that parents, teachers, or the easily offended can find blogs that are upfront about the type of content they contain.
Link: Network content ratings and my own promise

Good stuff, right?  Of course it is.

I may not be all that hip to the 'street' culture but I'm relatively sure that the G stands for Gangsta.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that you should head on over to Dave G's site and check his shi... stuff out.

(For the record, I think the House of Paincakes is all over the place in terms of a rating - but usually between a T and an M.  I wounder if I could get Dave to make us a special, HoP only rating that represents our wide range of appropriateness for age levels and the seemingly random chance it'll be different from day to day? )

International Cat Video Day of Healing

Just to prove that not everything here at the HoP is Serious Bizness these days, we're going to take this opportunity to take a break from the heated debates over sexuality, the female form, etc in gaming and bring you something completely different- the first ever International Cat Video Day of Healing!

Yeah, you read that right.   We decided to unwind a bit and take a break and post about cat videos.  We figured 'hey if Google creates an artificial intelligence and it learns to watch cat videos on its own then fuck it, cat videos are probably alright- plus, I can't conceive of how this could possibly lead to a flame war.'  "Your cat video is inferior and stupid." No, your cat video is the worst and you are a Nazi."  yeah, that sounds pretty silly.

So, here's a happy cat video for you all.  Share your own favorites via links or embedding in the comments and we'll get this ball of yarn a' rollin'.

HoP Idol Begins Today

The entries are in.  They have been great.

Starting later today, we'll begin running the short form essays from all of our applicants after announcing who is in the running.

2 of my personal idols- and a hilarious pic

Now here's the first twist (already, I know).  You won't be voting on anyone based on their short essay!  We're just going to post those as a "getting to know you" type of thing to familiarize you with the contestants and help get them some additional exposure.

Voting begins the week of 6/24 (or 24/6 if you're in one of those countries that's into that sort of thing) with our first round of challenges.  The candidates will receive instructions for this challenge some time this weekend.

....aaaaaaaaand on an unrelated note- I've got some shit up for sale on eBay.  Auctions end today, but if you're looking for some magic cards or other sundry items, please check out my auctions by following this link

A very slim portion of the proceeds of this will pay for the HoP URL for the next 3 years.  The rest of the proceeds will pay to replace my current laptop which is on the verge of melting down.... so will basically also help to allow the HoP to exist.

Community Announcement - Headshots from the Heart is Now LIVE!

Hey cats and kittens, just a quick heads up this fine Saturday afternoon on the cool charity work by Dave G that you've been hearing all the buzz about.

Anywho, the live coverage started just a little bit ago (as I post this) and there's all kinds of cool updates and even some live video.

But that's not all!  No sir.  There's also the many and wonderous auctions that are going to be going up throughout the the next 24 hours.

You can find info a list of what kind of cool things you'll have a chance at here.  Though you'll have to go to the live stream page for the details on the when and how.

Good Luck to Dave and the gang!

Community Re-Announcement: Headshots from the Heart Charity Drive

Hey guys, SinSynn is running a bit late today so while you're all waiting for whatever insane thing he's going to post, why don't you check this out?

A while back, we posted a little announcement about Dave G's (of Wargaming Tradecraft) charity event.

In essence, it's a video game marathon and painted miniature auction where the proceeds go to the Child's Play charity.  All the details are here and here.

Anyway, Dave has masterfully finished up the minis for the auction and the actual gaming marathon is right around the corner and will be starting this Saturday!

So you have a few days to consider donating and drooling over Dave's amazing models.

Saturday Stall

Frontline Gamer and I still haven't managed to get together to put the final touches on our ongoing series.  Which kind of ruins the 'ongoing' part now that I think about it.

In the interim, I thought that maybe His Lordship, Von Chesterfield Worchestershire Billingsworth III might be ready for his comeback.  Unfortunately for your chances of a Saturday post, he needs some information first.  So we're going to be running a poll that you see at the top of this page (that you couldn't help but notice).  For about a week.

Sorry in advance to the authors and readers for the layout change - but it's only temporary and this is important, damnit!

New Member Monday - Refer Madness

As ominously promised, part two of the weeding was completed last week.  So I thought I'd make a reference to everyone's favorite drug scare movie.  And then make a pun in the post title on account of all the reference I'm making.  Look...I know it's lame.  But weeding is depressing.  Obtuse jokes are all I have right now!

Well, obtuse jokes and cheap hooch.
Anyway, same deal as last week, first the good news, then the butcher bill.

Remember, if you want your blog moved to a different roll, now's the time to let us know.

Community Announcement: Headshots from the Heart Charity Drive

Here's a little something to warm the cockles of your collective hearts this fine Monday evening.

Seriously though, they do look pretty cold.
The illustrious and talented Dave G of Wargaming Tradecraft is gearing up for what promises to be a fascinating combination of a video game marathon and painted model auction.  For charity!

Specifically, Child's Play.

Here's the skinny:

Dave and his wife (and a whole host of other fine folks) are planning on playing Borderlands for a day straight (24 human hours to you SinSynn) and raising money from pledges - either a lump sum or based on how many headshots the charitable team can produce.

Beyond that, Dave will be painting up some themed miniatures as part of a two-pronged assault.

Did I mention that the whole thing will be webcast?  A crack team of support people are involved so you can follow along in the action.

Full details can be found at Wargaming Tradecraft or the Headshots from the Heart page.  I urge you to head on over there and donate whatever you can - money or just plain ol' gettin' the word out.

Since this event doesn't take place until late may, I recommend that you stay tuned to the Headshots mainpage to check in on the painting progress that'll be there.

New Member Monday - Seven Samurai

Akira Kurosawa is responsible for some pretty amazing films.  He also did Rashomon which I just plain don't like.  But whatever, everyone has a misstep here and there.  Akira Kurosawa's triumphs far outweigh any halfhearted defense I could give of my, admittedly, off kilter taste.

When I googled for the phrase off kilter, i thought to myself : "surely there has to be a tacky
Celtic  band out there who thought the phrase would make a good name.  I was right!  Sadly.

Yojimbo was so good it's been remade at least two times.  Speaking of amazing things and piss-poor segues, we have a fantastic and large group of new blogs to welcome to the rolls.  So I should probably get on that.

No winning essay this week, just a quick announcement:

Sometime in and over the next week or two, we're going to be weeding the blog rolls.  Not much is set in stone in terms of this process, but we do have some rough ideas for guidelines:

-Any blog that hasn't posted for at least 6 months is a candidate for being removed.  Which is not to say that it's a guarantee.
-Anything that hasn't updated in 9 months or more, however, will be removed.

It's all a little harsher than I'd like to be, but we're reaching a point where we need to be a bit more vigilant and exacting.

On a positive note, blogs are ONLY going to be removed from the rolls.  Everyone will still be included in the custom search as it doesn't affect readability.  Think of it as a different level of membership.

Once it's all said and done, a list of the removed blogs will be posted so anyone can rectify mistakes we may  have made and/or to give people a kick in the rear to get writing again.

As usual, comments and concerns are very welcome.  And be aware that this process may change.

[Musings of a Game Store Owner] Intelligent Design Supplemental

I just wanted to throw out a quick heads up for all the Intelligent Design fans out there.  Lo is running a kind of leftovers special over at her own blog (World of Wonder) and was too timid and polite to abuse her powers here at the House of Paincakes.

The first interview is up in it's totality so you can see all the cool stuff that hit the cutting room floor for the actual posts that appear here.  First up is Brian of a Gentleman's Ones fame.

Here's the linky to series:  Intelligent Design Interviews

Here's a  picture of some cool as balls marines from A Gentleman's Ones to pad out this post's length:
