MWC Conversion Contest

It looks like those zany funsters over at Miniature Wargame Conversions are at it again.  The Pay it Forward may have ridden off to different lands, but Red is back with the first of many conversion contests.

I strongly advise heading over there RIGHT NOW to check out the details.  And here's a link to the rules since I know you all love things that are easy and convenient.

Look. Clearly you're still reading this post - you just took the time to read these words and process them.  Why haven't you clicked on the links we gave you?  Seriously.  Go over to MWC.  STOP READING THIS POST!

Lets Punch Cancer in the Balls!

Just a quick heads up on a wonderful new project Red over Miniature Wargame Conversions is starting up.

With Pay it Forward coming to its end in the near future, Red is pumping his charitable spirit up TO THE MAX and starting the LiveStrong Wargaming movement to raise money for a cause very near and dear to his heart.

If you're interested, you can head on over to this post to get the full details.

There's even a little logo you can grab to show your support.  Red has helped us out in the past and his cause is so good that we couldn't resist flying it ourselves.

Pay It Forward Future Info

And good morrow to you all ye Churls, Knaves and wifmen!  Verily!

Just a quick note here from MWC who wanted to make sure people knew how the prizes were gonna work for the April Pay it Forward drawing.  This is important stuff since it also affects the winner of the Blog Role Naming Contest (Voting is still open for almost two days!)

I'll let Red take it from here:

So, as most of you know, the next give away winners will be drawn on April the 7th at 12 noon, Central US Daylight time. After trying a few different ways to see whats best, its most logical to post the winners on the blog at noon. I will then wait for the winners to email me the priority list of items they each want by the following morning. I will then take each winner and draw thier names out and the order I draw them out will be the order that priority choices are taken from.

So for example say John, Jeff and Jake are winners. They each mail me in a list of the 3 items and the order of "most wanted down to least wanted" . I then draw there names the following morning after I've gotten the lists from each of them. The order now is Jeff, Jake and then John. If all 3 had the same list of wants, Jeff would get his #1, Jake his #2 and John would get his #3. Sounds complicated but its really not. But if anyone has questions feel free to let me know. (miniaturewargameco@gmail.com)
.

After the April 7th Drawing there will be one more large drawing of prizes on the 1st of May. After the May drawing, Pay it Forward will be scaling down. But don't fear! Pay it Forward isn't dead. For 1, it will stay active on the MWC blog but will consist of mainly smaller prizes and things I personally can donate, or my own local group can. Secondly, and I already hear you guys and gals asking, "What about the big stuff??" Well, its got a new home. That's right, after the May 1st Drawing, Gifts of Mork, run by Jason/Arch and using the 40kforums.com as a platform will be handling the main things as well as expanding into even more ways of helping out other gamers.

Gifts of Mork, info can be found here along with where you start following to get in on the action, is a great new idea that has spawned from the brainchild of Pay it Forward. It will be a much more group run event with people from all over the world helping. Not only will there be free swag but other non profit charity style events. Not only will the idea of people being able to donate and have the chance to win things but it will consist of painters, modelers and hobbyists from around the world working for the greater good. Full info can be found here:

http://www.40kforums.com/vb/entry.php/259-Outlook-for-the-Future

That should cover the big stuff. I hope everyone has a great day and I do apologize for sending out an email Just seemed the best way to pass on important info. Any other normal news will be posted on the blog as usual.

And a winning essay this week from Drkmorals of The Emperor's Codex:

This site was recommended to me to try to request a link and join by a BOLS article I read. Normally I don’t believe anything I read on BOLS and discount everything written by Brent (advice from several other blogs one of them actually Brent’s) However I don’t give a damn what other people say I can or can’t do I am American after all. (Wait he told you not to trust his own advice? PARADOX! ) So I am requesting membership, however I might cancel right away if you let me in since I don’t know that I want to be a member of any circle that would have me as a member. Disclaimer offer not valid in all states, I may not actually discount all advice from Brent just all advice in general, no purchase required, BOLS, Brent and anything else you could possibly sue me over in this paragraph is actually property of its original owner, copyright and other such nonsense.

User Content Wednesday - Painting Tutorial: Sons of Horus

So we all saw the first two posts from the newest HoP author right?  No?!  What the f... go read them.  NOW!
You're back?  You're at least pretending you read them?  Good.  MWC is a man of many talents and I want to make sure people have a handle on the man and are aware that he isn't just some sort of divine good-will generating machine.  Enter the post below.  MWC does a lot more on his blog than just giving away free stuff.  He's an impressive conversionist (duh) and he also has a very, very snazzy Sons of Horus army.  Here's part of how he makes the magic happen.

Hey guys and gals, I've had alot of requests to give a step by step guide to painting the my Sons of Horus marines.

So here goes:

First off, you will need to mix up a pot of Metallic Green. What I did was get 1 pot of Chainmail Metal 1 pot of Scorpion Green and 1 pot of Camo Green. You will also need 2 empty paint pots.

Fill one empty pot half way with Scorpion Green. Then fill the same pot a quarter of the way with Camo Green. This should fill it to about 3/4ths.

Now pour the Chainmail Metal into the other empty pot half way. Now take your mixed green and pour that into the Chainmail Metal pot, filling it the other half. Shake for 10 or so minutes or just stir it for 5 or so and that's it.

You've now got a container full of Metallic Green.

Now that you have your Metallic Green, lets get to painting a marine.

Step 1 - I first undercoated the model with black primer. You can use white as well. I then base coated the marine twice with a light brushing of the Metallic Green. I try to get it all over while not coming out thick and hiding details.

Step 2 - I used Adeptus Battlegrey for all the armor trim, knee pads and weapon casing. Its ok to be sloppy at this stage and get some on the green. It will be touched up later.

Step 3 - I then come in with Dwarf Bronze for all the golds bits such as for the weapons, armor skulls and other things. I try to keep it tidy and not get it on the grey.

Step 4 - After the bronze I use Chainmail Metal for backpack vents, armor joints and metal on the weapons. I also paint the hoses and cables the same.

Step 5 - Once that's done I then come in with Bleached Bone for all the impurity seals, skulls, horns and anything else that should be bone colored.

Step 6 - Blood red is used for the seals on the impurity seals, krak grenades and for weapon and some helmet lenses.

Step 7 - I then follow that up with Camo Green used for any frag grenades and then a mix of Scorching Brown and Bleached Bone for the pouches. Bestial Brown would also work.

Step 8 - After all that is when I finally base coat the helmet the color it needs to be.

Step 9 - Skin and anything else is then painted. For skin I use Elf Flesh then continue on the steps below.

Step 10 - Before the first wash, I come in with the Metallic green we made earlier and touch up any and all mistakes that went onto the armor.

Step 11 - A medium wash of Devlan Mud over the entire model. Pooling is ok on the green.

Step 12 - Once the wash is dry, I then begin highlighting the green armor. I do 2 layers of the Metallic Green over all the raised areas like a normal highlight. Avoid mistakes.

Step 13 - Once that's done, I come in again with Dwarf Bronze and Highlight the gold. Then once that's dry and do a fine edge highlight with Shining Gold.

Step 14 - I then highlight all the impurity seals and boned parts with a fine single highlight of Bleached Bone.

Step 15 - I follow that with a light highlight with Chainmail Metal over all the metal parts.

Step 16 - Finally I use a fine detail brush and "ink line" anything the wash failed to get with Devlan Mud.

And that's it! You've now painted yourself a Sons of Horus.
