[Musings of a Game Store Owner] Ack!

For the past few weeks, I've been answering questions from readers (thanks SnaleKing and Bushcraft!). I've also been talking about things that "work" for FLGS type places- in business parlance, these things are called "best practices".

What they are in reality is tips one guy found, tried and discovered that they worked. So the dude tells his buddy, and these things work for the buddy. The buddy passes these tips on to another store operator, who finds the ideas have merit and so on.

Despite any ideas to the contrary, FLGS owners and operators are usually very friendly and willing to share ideas with each other. I know pretty much every owner of a FLGS in the state at least by name, and some are pretty close friends. I'm friendly with quite a few owners outside my area- either by email or Facebook. We try to do right by each other, while still making money as much as possible. For the most part, there's very little animosity or serious contentiousness. (There are some notable exceptions, but those people are jerks all around. It has nothing to do with owning a store.)

Don't be that person!

There comes a time when a store operator has to decide to break from the pack and do something outside of the best practices his friends and colleagues have passed on. Sometimes, you have to take a risk.

That's what we are about to do at the Gopher. I talked in the past about possibly expanding, and every time we looked before, something wasn't quite right. Either the space was too junky, or too nice; or the space was great but the location was terrible, or the location was fabulous and the space was ridiculously overpriced. In short, we never found the right mix for us and our needs.

That changed very recently. We were approached by our current landlord (who is absolutely awesome in every way) recently because a space in our complex was coming open. He knew we were looking for a bigger space, so he wanted to see if we were interested in the opportunity to move. It took us less than 10 seconds to reply- absolutely YES.

The new space is in the same complex we are in. We won't have to change our marquis sign. We won't have to get a truck to haul stuff. We won't have to change very much in terms of our address - one number will change, and we will have a different suite number. Our customers will continue to have TONS of free parking. We will continue to be easily accessible by the nearby highway exit (literally two stop lights north of us), and we will still offer great bus access. We will actually be closer to the bus drop off- a huge plus in many regards, as customers have to cross our ENORMOUS parking lot currently, but with the new location they will almost be dropped off at our door. We will continue to have the same fantastic landlord. Our space will be larger and will allow us to offer more product lines, more seating and more events.

The long awaited "open play" tables will be a reality! At the moment there are many nights where every table is full due to league or tournament play, and we desperately want to change that. So we told the landlord yes. We signed the lease and initially gave ourselves a full month to move to the new space.

And then we changed our minds.

We are moving into our new space effective April 1, and it is NOT a joke.

We're also doing it with 24 hours from the close at the old location and the open at the new one. (HINT: THIS IS NOT A BEST PRACTICE.)

Better hope you can make that!

TheDude and I looked over all the things that need to be done, and most of it is administrative. I've already changed phone and trash, insurance and gotten a press release written. Power, water and post office will be later this week. TheDude has started the process of transferring the distributor accounts, new business cards, letting the bank know and has worked out a nice deal with the current tenant to purchase some helpful fixtures.

I'm arranging the moving crew- yet again, it is made up of awesome customers who are more like family than people that buy stuff from us. The people that we hawk shiny things to are so excited to buy stuff from us, they are taking time out of their lives on a holiday weekend (yeah, Easter Sunday is when we are doing a lot of moving stuff) and helping us for FREE.

A move of any sort is usually something you announce MONTHS in advance. Most often, you want some lead time to train your customers about the change and why it's a plus. When we made the announcement, our customers quite literally applauded- and offers of help and congratulations started rolling in faster than we could reply.

We're beyond thrilled, but equally terrified. Our continual attitude of not really ever being ready for the changes upcoming has suited us well in this situation, and we're doing our best not to freak out, and trust that everything will get done in time.

ACK.

[Musings of a Game Store Owner] Recent Happenings

We all know the "old gamer", the guy that's been around the store or scene for as long as we can remember. The guy that knows all the stories, and is as grizzled as they come.

These guys are die hard old school gamers, and have all kinds of wisdom and sometimes mayhem to share with the younger and newer folks in the crowd.

We all know that guy, and some of us even take the time to get to know them and find out their story. Over at our local shop, we've had the good fortune to get to know one of these guys pretty well (and spend more than a few nights drinking with him), and he's recently done some awesome stuff that I wanted to share.

This guy is the ultimate "old school" gamer, the grognard we all hear about, and he owns it. He rocks the dice and loves to regale those that will listen with tales of dungeon crawling and zero-level character deaths galore.

But there's a twist. My pal has ventured onto the internet and gotten himself connected with friends and writers via Facebook and forums, websites and blogs, and has expanded his influence past our little community. He's made some great friends and has been working diligently on "old school" RPG adventures for Pathfinder for the past year with the idea of publishing them in a compendium. He's also a big reviewer, and checks out tons of materials and passes on his wisdom pretty much daily.

My buddy has been reviewing, writing and otherwise working on materials for various adventures over the past year, keeping his little project as his end goal in mind as he did so.

With his massive publication project on the horizon, he was writing like a madman when he up and had a stroke. The stroke seriously interfered with his communication center - he couldn't read or write easily, and speech was difficult. None of this bothered him- he refused to let his project be derailed in any way. He dove into rehab and made an exceptionally fast recovery (back to writing for his project within weeks) and has kicked off his project in grand style.

The project fully funded in under 24 hours- and you should check this awesome stuff out. There's still a ton of stretch goals and awesome unlockables- and anything I can do to support this guy who kicked the ass of a stroke to keep on publishing is worth it in my book....

[Musings of a Game Store Owner] I'm Good At My Job!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, friends, family, assorted others and anyone listening- I have talked about what I do at the store for a long time. I've shared various tips and comments, insights and concerns with you for well over a year now.

So far, everything I have discussed and all my claims are just that- claims. I haven't really had very much to back me up in my commentary; but that all changed this week.

Here's some evidence.

The publication in question is operated by the local university's journalism department, and the voting is open to the public. Our community voted in droves- the folks in 2nd and 3rd place have been open for literally DECADES and are pretty much institutions in our area.

While I'm flattered and humbled that we won, the real credit goes to TheDude. I've probably talked your ear off about the things he does for the store, but he really does work himself until he's exhausted to make the store better. I'm really proud of all the effort he's put in, and it makes me glad to see that he's finally being recognized for what he does.

We said it before and we'll say it again: this didn't happen by our hands alone. We have the best customers anyone could ever ask for, and we're grateful to be able to serve them day in and day out. We're truly honored to have a shot at earning not just their business but their friendship; and we're really glad they like us.

Weekly Top X- Crime and Punishment

Loquacious is trying to get settled into the new Illinois Central Servicing Office of HOP. The building is undisquisedly ugly, cinder block and steel, with overly shiny floors from a massive coat of Simonizing wax.

There are no rock n roll posters, no tea cushions with frippery and no tentacle hentai. There is also a decided lack of painting tables or cat trees, and Lo is fussing about the office, shouting loudly:

WHERE IS MY THRONE????

It's true, Lauby cheaped out on the furniture, with everything ordered direct from
CubicleMart. Lo seems  extra put out at her missing chair. She flumps down on a folding chair at her makeshift desk and simply pouts for a moment while she scrounges inside her everyday purse.

A UPX Driver enters the building and produces a SUPER PRIORITY Envelope.

"Ms. Uh.....Lock....Loqui---Locker...- what the hell is your name?"

"Loquacious. It means I talk a lot. People call me Lo. What do you have? More fan mail for the alien?"

"Um. No. It's a Signature Required item. For you."

Loquacious whips out a pen (because she always has at least one) and signs for the envelope.

The UPX driver hurries out, seemingly knowing the contents of the envelope are BadNews(Tm).

Lo opens the envelope and reads a letter which is apparently from Lauby. It is written in VeryBossyWords and Lo scowls at the page as it nearly screams at her

"Don't do this! Do that! Stand up straight! Get out of my way" and the like.

The queen of words "hmphs" as she finishes reading the paper. She is VeryMad and working up to TotallyPostal as she straightens things along her nearly empty desk.

"Been getting by on friendship for too long, huh? Gotta start pulling my weight, huh? Need to write a "PROPER" Top X, and "no Alien allowed", huh?"

Lo empties her purse onto the desktop and finds a pretty good sized bottle of Herradura Anejo along with pens, loose change, about 8 debit cards, gum wrappers and several checkbooks. She smiles, takes a good sniff, and then looks for a Dixie cup or other container to use so she can sip the good stuff. She finally finds a Solo Cup and she pours her self a snout while she begins typing.

"So I gotta write a Top X by myself, huh. And I gotta follow the RULES, huh? Lessee here.... Must be about HobbyInSomeWay. It HelpsIfItWillAppealToThe OtherWritersOfHOP. Be Specific. No Help from ThatAlien. and.... FEATURE BLOGS YOU HAVE NEVER FEATURED BEFORE."

Lo takes a good, long sip on her golden liquid, and begins reciting, to herself, the blogs for Top X this week.

1.) Corbiana Prime : Eldar Ressurected

Lauby should like that one. It's all those fancy SpaceElves -so pretty. Rediscovering hobby after a long time is also a bonus. Hobby AND Xenos stuffs should go well.

2.) Garganthar : Painting Updates And More- Hobgoblins and Lava Bases

Von should like this one. It's got those fun Hobgoblins and fancy bases and such. Turkish gamer, to boot. Nice!

3.) Paint Bard : Almost There, Almost There

This one's for Brent...if he's still part of our crew... I can't even see if he has a desk.. since...

well...

she makes finger quote motions

FIRE BAD....

4.) Send Three Squads To Help : Magnetizing Carnifex

Well despite that model being a deathdealing bitch to take on, this is a nice tutorial on magnetizing a mini. Definitely HobbyRelated! Von used to like Cryxx, so; bonus?

Lo is sipping away at her drink and is on her way to LitUp as she continues. She checks the paper to make sure it doesn't say "no swearing" and proceeds.

5.) Do You Have A Flag : Custom Space Marine Draco Banner

Another Brit, doing fine HobbyWork. With a PAPERCLIP! A man after my own heart, knows how to use office supplies to make art and not UGLY---

Dethtron would probably like this- I mean, it's home made instead of spending lots of cash. Plus, it fits into a very metal theme. Yeah, Dethy should love this.

She glares around the office in a very specific manner, noting a lack of "pretty".  She looks one more time in her purse and finds several bottles of OPI polish. She gets a decidedly wicked grin but continues along with her assignment.

6.) The Istvaanians : More Mutants Sighted

This one should make my Xenos buddy happy. I mean, Choas is awesome, and this is tons of fun hobby stuffs the guy is doing. He didn't care what the rules said! He just made things up. Yeah, that sounds like stuff SinSynn would like.

Lo has given up on sipping her beverage and is now taking small gulps. She has moved into NotQuiteDrunk territory and seems to be talking to the paper.

"I will totally bust into Prince songs whenever the heck I want. You can't stop me!"

7.) Turn 7 Wargaming : Battle Report - Tyranids vs Space Wolves

Ooooooooooh! A battle report! HOP used to be all about these. This should make everyone happy! Xenos, battle report, nice models... what else do they want?

8.) Farseer With a Brush : Cutting Costs: Sculpting Tools

Well, this one is perfect for Dethtron's Gaming on A Budget Series... it's a series, and it's talking about important things in a hobbyist's arsenal.... Yeah, good stuff here.

9.) FreshCoast40K : With A Little Help From My Friends

Ok, so this one isn't hobby related. But which one of us is gonna complain about pimping a friend's MUSIC when we do it all the time? Dethtron? Yeah, right. NORDOR will come kick his butt. Lauby? Uh, no way.  SinSynn? If he so much as TRIES to protest I'll tie him down and make him listen to Adele. And Von? After all the times I have subbed for him? Yeah. Didn't think so.

10.) Miasma of Pestilence : First Try At Airbrushing

Yeah, I better finish with some hobbying. I mean, I can only break the rules SOME of the time, right?  Well, the guy has a new toy and shows us all the stuff he did with it. Fancy!

With that, Lo seems to remember she was DoingSomething and looks back at her desk. Her mostly empty bottle of liquor and several small bottles of premium fashion lacquer sit in plain sight, and Lo begins to sing "Housequake" very loudly.

She begins painting the legs of her desk with Girly Glam and adds Number One Nemesis along the edge of the desktop. She smiles and then finishes off with SaveMe.

"yeah, that's fancy... and pretty.... much better. I think I need more booze, though."

FTB....
