SinSynn is Totally a Noob

Hey folks, SinSynn here.

So lately I've been thinking about Tournaments, cuz I will definitely be attending one in the next few months.
I'm registered to play my Flames of War Germans in the upcoming Conflict GT event.
There's a 40k thingy goin' on there, too....but I'm all into FoW lately, so....yeah.

I suppose that means I've got a handful of months to actually learn to PLAY this game, huh?
:P

Right now, it feels like I'm at the low point of the learning curve...facing a steep climb.

*Below 'novice' is 'complete and utter noob,' not represented here*

The Ultimate Rival and myself have kicked into what I'd call 'Rocky Training Mode,' if like, y'know...there was anything 'Rocky-like' about prepping for a Tournament.

...
Cuz I'm totally 'Eye of the Tiger' as I...bench-press that rulebook.
:P

And, for the record: The Ultimate Rival?

*Way scarier than this guy's haircut*

As of late I've had my ass handed to me in multiple test games.
Literally.
When those games ended I was all like, 'Excuse me- can someone hand me my ass? It got shot off somewhere around turn 3 and I'm not sure where the chunks got to. Most of my face, head and neck did as well, so....Hey, little help?'

Ugh, it's been bad, but I'm learning, right?
-_-

I'm still learning to build balanced lists, still learning to manage my lil' troopies on the tabletop, still learning the friggin' rules, fer cryin' out loud...
But I'm at that 'rough point' in the learning curve, I think.

Y'know, that point where your somewhat confident you're familiar with how your army works, how the game works, etc...but then after you lose you realize you TOTALLY forgot some basic rule that woulda changed everything.
Oof. Total *facepalm* moment, amirite?

I'm also at that point where I'm just 'throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks,' as far as my Army List are concerned.
I fully admit to being kinda a (big, giant) knucklehead when it comes to choosing units.

...yes, I'm that guy that's like, 'Ooh! Lookit THIS! This thingy is da awesome! I gots to try one o' dese!

I should probably choose my units based on stuffs like, oh I don't know...stats?

Maybe I should choose units that would, oh I don't know...compliment the rest of my force?

*See this chart? It's fucking stupid.*

Y'know what? The other day my poor lil' army got beaten, again.
Y'know why I lost? Every noob reason in the book.
...Bad list, bad deployment, bad choices.

NOTE- I could totally add 'bad dice' to that list, but that's just a curse I live with, NOT necessarily a 'noob' issue.
Stupid...cursed dice...they're stupid.

Since the Ultimate Rival and I are like, in 'Super Ultra Gamer Tournament Rocky Mode,' or whatever, we ran a scenario likely to appear in the upcoming event.
Following the game we did a 'breakdown,' where we discussed everything.
What worked, what didn't, what we would do differently, etc.

My mistakes were pretty obvious, and to be honest...I was kicking the lil' Hamster in my head and blaming him for everything.
...what?
DON'T YOU JUDGE ME!
Clearly, I am genius, and it was all the Hamster's fault...nyah.
:P

When I got home, I immediately started plotting.
The (now somewhat angry and resentful) Hamster in my head was spinning away on his lil' wheel, and various plots and schemes for righting the injustices done unto me were bubbling away....

Multiple books were strewn about, Post-It notes marking passages that I know I needed 20 minutes ago, for some reason...whatever it was...

I was furiously pounding out lists on my computer, going through virtually every single variant available in Easy Army...digesting the info...processing...

I pored over the dozens of PDF's available at the Flames of War website...digging deeper...and deeper...

...and then, I had that...moment of clarity. Of...realization.
Suddenly, the things I was looking at...made sense.

I was all like:
*And unfortunately, the NY Jets will never win a Superbowl*

Suddenly, all those statlines weren't just a bunch of stupid numbers. No, there was meaning there now, I saw that.

The pieces fell into place and I...understood stuffs.
The learning curve didn't look...quite so brutal any more.

It was cool.
:)

Now, don't get it twisted...I still have no plans to get all 'mathammer-y,' or become 'joe competitive'
or whatever.
I won't be using a 'netlist.'

Yeah, maybe I could save myself a bit o' grief by hittin' the ol' interwebs for some L33T hacks, or whatever...but I don't wanna.
No, I wanna learn this game the old fashioned way...by getting curbstomped repeatedly.
*big dumb grin*

I've already been through that whole thing with 40k, and I can honestly say one thing:

A) I can't be trusted with a list, regardless...I hafta fiddle with it (needs moar Shadowsun).
-and-
B) Mathammer does NOT APPLY to the cursed...so nyah.

Wait...was that two things?
*shrug*

I'm sure eventually I'll be some grizzled old Flames of War dude, all jaded and whatnot...pronouncing things 'fail' with absolute certainty...bitching and moaning about stuffs...
*sigh*
It could happen...

But for now, I'm gonna embrace that learning curve, even though I know that 'learning curve' is basically a gentle way of saying 'get ready for a clubbin,' baby seal,' in this case.
Blah.

I would say something like, 'wish me luck,' but my Xenos physiology seems to have some sort of 'luck repellant' properties so...yeah.
...

Oh! One more thing, before I forget...

And furthermore...

Oh, wait...was that two things? Damnit!
I always screw that up...

Stupid...learning curves...they're stupid.
;)

Until next time folks- have a very Xenos day!
